About UX Design Positions

A UX designer, or user experience designer, ensures that the “user experience” for individuals using websites or applications is as smooth, efficient, and accessible. It is an extremely competitive position to apply for in the UK, and candidates will need to demonstrate to employers that they have:

  • The relevant qualifications (which may or may not include a degree)
  • Knowledge and experience relating to user experience, user interface design, and other areas related to the specific position
  • A certain number of years of experience in their particular field or discipline

Roles and Responsibilities

Broadly, it is the responsibility of a UX designer to handle users’ impressions and interactions with a given brand. Exact duties beyond this will depend on the size of the individual organisation, the type of industry said organisation is based within, and the overall seniority of the individual employee.

There are some typical responsibilities that UX designers will most likely be asked to undertake, regardless of their position within an organisation:

Senior business manager guiding employees in meeting.
  • Meeting with clients to obtain information about their requirements
  • Proposing and sketching out visual concepts, both on paper and using software applications
  • Creating user personas, user journeys, and site maps
  • Translating concepts into wireframes, prototypes, and user flows using specialist tools
  • Working on cross-platform applications to develop user experiences, covering mobile phones, tablets, and computers
  • Working collaboratively with other designers, product design and development teams, business analysts, engineers, and project managers
  • Liasing regularly with clients to ensure that designs meet requirements and core business objectives
  • Attending meetings to discuss and review progress on the project
  • Running workshops for clients and internal stakeholders
  • Working with the research team to plan and conduct remote and on-site user research and usability testing with real users to ensure the end-product design provides users with the optimum experience in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, and engagement
  • Writing reports and communicating the results of work
  • Identifying areas of improvement
  • Redesigning websites to make them more responsive
  • Redesigning or creating apps that are easy to use and configured appropriately for smartphones and tablets
  • Keeping up-to-date with technological innovations and new tools

As well as these responsibilities, individuals holding a senior or manager position will also be expected to:

  • Ensure adherence to design standards, guidelines, and best practices
  • Oversee research and insight projects to understand user needs
  • Manage, mentor, and support more entry-level and junior members of the UX design team
  • Ensure that all colleagues in their organisation have an understanding of UX design practices

Qualifications and Certifications

Most candidates for UX designer jobs will require a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant subject:

  • Computer science
  • Digital design
  • Digital media
  • Graphic design
  • Media technology
  • Web design

Other degrees which employers are likely to consider are those which are related to design, computing, apps development, digital media, or technology options.

While most candidates will need to have undertaken the graduate route to be considered for a position, this is not the only way that an individual may become a UX designer. If an individual is self-taught, competent in HTML, and demonstrates an understanding of the software used in UX work, a relevant degree may not be considered as important.

Candidates that have relevant work experience, or have undertaken an internship, apprenticeship, or placement, are also likely to be considered by employers. For individuals who are graduates but do not have a degree in a relevant subject, it is also possible to take courses or enrol on programmes that build knowledge and skill in UX design.

It is highly recommended that you carry out careful research before deciding on a course, in order to ensure that it meets your needs and that matches the goals you have for your career. Networking and speaking with individuals who are already UX designers may also provide insight, and they may be able to offer advice as to which qualifications and certifications will be most useful.

The Necessary Skills

Individuals looking to succeed when applying for Contact and Permanent UX designer jobs will most often need to demonstrate a range of hard and soft skills. Hard skills often listed as requirements in a UX designer job description include:

  • An ability to carry out effective research
  • Excellent visual communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with information architecture
  • Knowledge and experience with prototyping quickly and effectively
  • Knowledge and experience with wireframing

Soft skills that a candidate may require to be considered for a UX designer position include:

  • A high level of concentration
  • An ability to adapt and be flexible within an everchanging industry
  • Collaboration skills
  • Demonstrating curiosity
  • Demonstrating empathy
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent visual awareness

The UX Designer Salary

The salary of a UX designer can vary greatly, depending on location in the UK, how senior an individual’s position is, and how many years of experience they have in their chosen discipline, field, or sector.

London is considered by many to be the tech capital of Europe, and even entry-level positions typically offer a higher salary than many other job roles, with an average starting salary of £27,000. Meanwhile, junior UX designers with between 1 and 3 years of experience can expect an average salary of £38,000 to £54,000. Mid-level individuals, with 3 to 5 years of experience, can expect their salary to range between £43,000 and £63,000. Senior or manager-level UX designers with around 5 to 7 years of experience can expect a salary of around £47,000 to £71,000, based on how much experience they have. Senior individuals with even more experience than this may be offered salaries of £150,000 or more.

This information is specifically related to London, however, and to the fact that the city is home to more than 40,000 tech companies. These companies include Google and Amazon, both of which are known for paying above-market salary rates. Salaries for UX designer jobs elsewhere in the UK are likely to differ because of this, as the proportion of well-known tech companies is likely to be lower and spread over a wider distance.
