Expectations of Product Design Jobs

On the most basic level, the job of a production designer is to understand the problems a customer is having and to provide solutions. The responsibilities and expectations that come with this are then likely to increase and vary depending on whether it is an entry-level, junior, mid-level, or senior position.

During the product design process, an individual will most likely be expected to:

  • Define a problem and a supposed solution
  • Analyse the problem
  • Analyse all possible variants of the solution and create concepts of those solutions
  • Build prototypes
  • Decide on the best solution by conducting analysis and testing

Other expectations, depending on the seniority of the position and the individual job description, include:

  • Identifying gaps in the market and creating ways to fill the
  • Carrying out competitive analysis and research
  • Setting up tests and deciding what data to gather
  • Communicating with customers and understanding the market
  • Translating customer needs into features and marketing copy
  • Building teams to get the end product
  • Creating mockups and flows for the user interface
  • Applying UX laws, colour, space, typography, iconography, and illustrations
  • Designing micro-interactions
  • Applying motion to improve user experience
  • Gathering insights and feedback

These are not the only expectations that candidates may come across in job descriptions for product design jobs. Organisations will set their own expectations individually, depending on what they need, so responsibilities may appear to vary between companies even if the job title is the same.

Employment Sectors for Product Designers

An individual searching for product design jobs is likely to find positions in:

  •  Industrial product manufacturing
  • Domestic product manufacturing
  • Vehicle manufacturing
  • The pharmaceutical industry
  • Retail
  • Point-of-sale design

Required Qualifications

Most product designers will be graduates, having a Bachelor’s degree, a foundation degree, or a Higher National Diploma (HND) in a relevant subject – especially product design. Other courses that offer a design element as part of general design or technology studies would also be considered relevant.

Other subjects which may also be considered include:

  • Industrial design
  • Spatial design
  • 3D design

Many experts consider it useful to have taken a course which includes a relevant placement year or has significant practical design content. Many organisations will require candidates to present a portfolio of design work when applying for positions, so it is important to have as much experience and evidence of experience as possible.

Candidates who are not graduates, or do not have an HND, are unlikely to be considered.

Many will also find that having a master’s degree or another postgraduate qualification is advantageous in certain sectors. This is particularly true when working with European customers and competitors. Candid
