Find out more about how we can assist and match individuals to Permanent and Contract positions in data analysis below.

Data Analyst Jobs, Requirements and Expectations

Our Technology Division is positioned to work cross-sector within a range of Technological disciplines in London and across the wider UK. We are often called to help organisations fill data analyst positions, or to assist talent with finding the Permanent and Contract data analyst roles  that suit their needs. Alongside this, we may also be called upon to assist in matching organisations and talent in a myriad of similar roles and positions:

  • Business intelligence analyst
  • Data analytics consultant
  • Data engineer
  • Data scientist (and other roles in data science)
  • Marketing analyst
  • Operations analyst
  • Project manager

In our position as a specialist technology recruitment agency, we have established and solidified particularly strong relationships with many companies, businesses, and organisations related to the Financial Sector. Because of this, we often work with Tier 1 banks and FinTechs to provide them with short-term and long-term placements.

These are not the only sectors of industry we will find placements for, though. Digital Media and Telecom services in particular, as well as talent looking for roles within these sectors, will all benefit from our work.

Data Analyst Positions

Data analyst positions are in high demand across London and the wider UK, and the variations in this highly-skilled role mean that different positions offered by different organisations will require:

  • Graduate candidates (candidates with degree-level qualifications)
  • Knowledge or experience related to different programming languages
  • A certain number of years of experience in their chosen field

For an entry-level or graduate position, data analyst jobs will normally require the individual to be office-based. However, consultant positions may also require the individual to travel, and senior positions may be offered the opportunity to carry out remote work.

What is Expected in a Data Analyst Role

Talent working in a data analyst role can expect to complete a range of tasks and carry out a number of duties. These may vary depending on whether the position is a junior, mid-level, or senior position, and evolve with the needs of the organisation involved.

Data analyst work will normally involve gathering and scrutinising data using specialist tools to generate information that helps individuals in their decision-making process. They will be expected to respond to questions about data, as well as to look for patterns, trends, and anomalies within it.

Other duties that are commonly associated with the data analyst role include:

  • Identifying areas where efficiency may be increased and the automation of processes improved
  • Setting up processes and systems to make working with data more efficient
  • Mining and analysing large datasets, drawing valid inferences and presenting them successfully to management using a reporting tool
  • Producing and tracking key performance indicators
  • Researching new ways to make use of the data obtained
  • Preparing reports for internal and external audiences using business analytics reporting tools
  • Producing charts and reports that communicate trends within data to non-specialists
  • Presenting information generated to managers and clients

These are not the only expectations set for data analyst positions, however. Individual expectations will be set by the specific organisation a candidate applies to, meaning that the role may differ depending on the company and the position offered.

The Necessary Skills

As with most Tech roles, the skills required to succeed in a data analyst position can be split into hard skills and soft skills. The hard skills that will be sought after by recruitment professionals include:

  • The ability to analyse, model, and interpret data
  • The ability to learn new programming languages
  • Considerable skill with Microsoft Excel
  • Advanced mathematical skills
  • Data visualisation and data cleaning skills
  • Data management experience

It may be that some of these skills will be demonstrated through an individual candidate’s education history and academic qualifications. It is also possible that candidates will have obtained other, similar skills through years of experience in their chosen sector. They will have then demonstrated these through their professional status within their previous place of employment.

Soft skills that a candidate for a data analytics position should have include:

  • Critical thinking skills
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Written and verbal communication skills (including teamwork and interpersonal skills)
  • An understanding of the ethics involved in gathering and working with data
  • A methodical and logical approach
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • The ability to plan work and meet deadlines

Types of Data Analyst

An individual looking at data analyst jobs will find positions in a range of sectors, including:

  • Business intelligence
  • Data assurance
  • Data quality
  • Finance
  • Higher education
  • Leisure and hospitality
  • Marketing and social media
  • Retail
  • Sales
  • Software development
  • Telecommunications

Required Qualifications

Data analyst job descriptions will not always require a candidate to be a graduate, but a degree is often required. Having a bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant subject may be a stipulation, and relevant subjects include:

  • Business information systems
  • Computer science
  • Economics
  • Information management
  • Mathematics
  • Statistics

For candidates searching for data analyst jobs within the Government Statistical Service, a degree that includes at least 25% statistical content, such as mathematics, economics, or psychology, will be required.
