Infrastructure Engineer – Windows
Permanent Position – 4 days a week in the office (Paddington) & 1 day from home
Salary: £45,000 – £55,000 + 10% Bonus
We are working with a FTSE 100 client who specialise in Transportation across the UK. My client is seeking an experienced Microsoft Windows Infrastructure Engineer to join their team. This individual will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of Windows-based systems. The role includes a strong emphasis on managing Active Directory, as well as key Microsoft servers and services such as SQL Server, Exchange Server, Remote Desktop Services, and Endpoint Configuration Manager, both on-premises and within Azure. Experience with Azure or AWS would be advantageous.

Main Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee Windows-based systems, including servers, workstations, and related infrastructure.
- Work in partnership with the hosting provider to install, configure, and maintain Windows operating systems, ensuring optimal performance, security, and reliability.
- Design, implement, and manage Active Directory services, including user and group management, permissions, and security policies.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deploy, configure, and manage Azure-based services, such as virtual machines, storage, networking, and identity management.
- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and perform regular system maintenance to ensure high availability and performance.
- Implement and maintain system backups, contribute to disaster recovery plans, and ensure business continuity.
- Ensure system and data security by implementing appropriate access controls, authentication mechanisms, and security patches.
- Address and resolve technical issues related to Windows systems, Active Directory, and Azure services.
- Work closely with other IT teams and stakeholders to plan, execute, and support IT infrastructure projects.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in Windows systems administration, Active Directory, Azure, and AWS.
- Provide support and administration of assets within AWS, including upgrading components to keep services supported and up-to-date.
- Support the currently installed application suites.
- Design, plan, and implement new application installations.
- Oversee application lifecycles to ensure that their software suite remains supported with timely upgrades, and drive continual improvement in the area of expertise.
- Conduct regular audits to maintain compliance and ensure correct license usage.
- Collaborate with internal teams to propose and implement new applications.
- Work with vendors and other third-party support teams.
- Provide general second-line support for Windows environments as part of the Operations Support team.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and offer thought leadership and recommendations for adoption.
- Mentor the Service Desk team to enhance support for the installed application base.
Key Skills and Experience
- Familiarity with the challenges of supporting a large 24/7 operation.
- Expertise in desktop and server operating system environments.
- Strong knowledge of AWS.
- Proficient in application support, troubleshooting, and application lifecycles.
- Experience with Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Services and application provisioning within full desktops and App-V implementations.
- Experience in Amazon Web Services administration and support.
- ITIL v3 Foundation certified, with experience in ITIL-aligned environments.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Configuration Manager is desirable.
- Ability to work independently, with initiative, and to meet deadlines.
