What is the Average Data Analyst Salary in the UK?

The purpose of a data analyst within an organisation is to help increase efficiency. Those searching for new talent to fill this role within their own firm will therefore wish to ensure that the salary offered is as attractive as the rest of the job description. This helps to make sure those with the highest level of skill are applying.

Similarly, those searching for a new role in data analysis will want to know that the data analyst salary they are being offered is at the very least the average rate. If these salaries can be made competitive and help to match their needs and requirements for a new position, then all the better.

To help ensure that you are offering or searching for the right salary for a data analyst position in the UK, we have provided a guide below.

Data analyst average salary

How much does a data analyst make?

Salaries for data analysts in the United Kingdom vary from location to location, meaning that there is unlikely to be one overall “average” salary for the entire country. This is especially the case when considering London as opposed to anywhere else in the UK. How much any one person will make will also be based off a range of individual factors, such as their specific organisation and their seniority within said organisation.

For ease of reading and your convenience, we have separated each of these averages into different sections based on seniority below:

The average data analyst salary in the UK

As of 2022, the national average for a data analyst is somewhere around £35,000. Broader pay ranges than this are available, depending on location and the skill and experience of the individual in question. This also does not include the salaries available from organisations based in London.

The average data analyst salary in London

As London is a business and technical hub, with more than 38,000 tech firms based there as of 2021, you can expect data analyst jobs within the capital to be more competitive to get and more lucrative to have. Many of these firms, if not all, will be in a better position to offer a higher salary to its employees than a business based elsewhere in the UK.

It should also be noted that the average data analyst salary will fluctuate even between these individual organisations. As a result, you might find salaries for a data analyst job title that begin at ££39,000 and go up to £50,000, but also find the same position being offered for somewhere between £50,000 and £60,000 elsewhere.

Some of these fluctuations will also be in relation to the amount of knowledge, skill, and experience, as well as the level of education, that an individual has. The amount given as payment may then increase with the development of skills attained while working, through training, or through further education conducted alongside or between jobs.

The average salary for a data analyst with a Master’s degree

A data analyst with a Master’s degree is more likely to start on a higher salary than those who began their careers with Bachelor’s degrees. This means their starting salary is likely to be at the higher end of salaries for entry level positions. For a candidate outside of London, this might mean starting on a salary of around £23,000 or more. For a candidate working within London, the number will probably be slightly higher than this at £25,000. After this, the individual will receive promotions and increases in pay based on their knowledge, skill, and ability at their position.

The average salary for a senior data analyst

Salaries for senior data analysts can vary greatly, depending on where an individual is based in the UK. For some, an annual salary may be as low as anywhere between £39,000 and £47,387. For others, meanwhile, it may be as high as £77,000 or more. Some senior data analysts may even be paid as much as £97,500 and have this be considered an average salary for the organisation they work for.

These higher salaries are more likely to be the case in London, where many senior data analysts will be expected to have a median annual salary of about £52,525. As the individual grows in their position and spends more time learning new skills and gaining new knowledge, this is then likely to increase to a higher amount.

The average salary for a mid-level data analyst

The average salary for a mid-level data analyst in the UK is around £35,000. This is near-enough the average for data analysts in general across the whole of the country. It is also possible to find individuals whose pay is slightly lower than this, though why this is will depend on the individual themselves. It may be the case that they have been promoted from a junior level position based on knowledge and skill and they are still working towards earning a higher salary, or they have switched careers from a similar field and still require some experience before being offered a higher salary.

London averages for mid-level data analysts’ salaries tend to be higher, starting at around £39,000 and working their way up to around £50,000. Some organisations may also have an average salary for mid-level positions that is higher than this.

The average salary for a junior data analyst

Junior-level data analysts who have between 1 and 3 years of experience are likely to be earning an annual salary of somewhere around £23,000. This is the average for individuals working outside of London, and may increase to an annual salary of £25,000 or more depending on years of experience. Some of the top earners at this level across the UK may be making £29,000 or more.

For those working within London, a junior data analyst is likely to have a starting salary of around £26,000. This may then increase as time goes on to an average of somewhere between £30,000 and £35,000, depending on the organisation itself and the amount of experience the person has in their position. By this stage, many of these talented individuals will be working towards becoming mid-level data analysts, and as such their pay scale will reflect the transition.

Data analyst in the UK

The average salary for an entry-level data analyst

The salary for an intern working in data analysis will depend on the organisation they are working for, but experts suggest that the average salary for these individuals is £20,175 on an annual basis across the whole of the UK. The hourly rate for a data analysis intern is about £16.33. These numbers may then increase if the individual in question was hired to work at a firm in London. In the capital, talented graduates who are only just starting out as interns may see an average salary of around £25,000 or more.

This beginner salary may then increase even further, depending on years of experience, the skills learned while working in this position, and the person’s ability in the role they’ve been given. This is especially true and likely to be the case for candidates coming in from other job roles with the intention of changing careers. Those with less experience or who are just entering the job market through the graduate route are less likely to be offered positions on the higher end of the scale.

The average daily rate for an independent contractor

For a data analyst working as an independent contractor in most of the UK, the average daily rate will be somewhere around £422 per day when excluding London. Typically, they will charge an hourly rate of about £21.75. When London is included in this list of figures, the average daily rate increases to about £475, and the hourly rate increases to about £25.

Daily rates can increase beyond this, however – especially if the contractor in question has many years’ experience and would be operating at a senior level if they worked in-house. For instance, independent data analysis contractors in the 90th percentile with 10 years’ experience or more might instead charge a daily rate of somewhere around £650.

The average rate for a freelance data analyst

The average rate for a freelance data analyst will vary a lot more than many other positions. This is because, as a freelancer, they are able to charge their own fees based on a certain number of hours of work. They will also be able to decide if they would like to be paid hourly or to charge a flat day rate. As such, they may decide to set an average hourly rate of £17.95, which is the average hourly rate across the UK. On the other hand, they may also decide to set a flat day rate of £475 – the same as an independent contractor working for a firm in London.

As with other positions, the number of years of experience will also have an impact on what a freelance data analyst is able to charge. For instance, an individual with 1 year of experience would not be able to charge the same amount as someone with 5 years of experience or more.Discuss Technology with us
